Brain Injury Facts:

  • Brain injury is the leading cause of death or disability for children and young adults.
  • More than 2% of the U.S. population lives with disabilities resulting from a brain injury.
  • The most common cause of brain injuries are falls, car accidents and assaults.
  • Concussions are the most common form of brain injury, but symptoms are often not seen in medical tests.  
  • It can take months or years for the brain to heal from a concussion.
  • Blast areas are a leading cause of TBI (traumatic brain injury) for active duty military personnel serving in the war zones.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that at least 5.3 million Americans have long-term or lifelong need for help to perform the activities of daily life because they have suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic Brain Injury Assistance Needs:

  • Improvement of memory and problem solving
  • Management of stress and emotional upsets
  • Control of temper
  • Improvement of job skills

Brain Injury Changes:

Brain injury can mean many functional changes for the person involved affecting thinking, sensation, language and emotions.  Brain injury can cause epilepsy and it increases the risk for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases and all other brain disorders which become more prevalent with age.
